Members Christmas Party
Branch 464 Chatsworth had a rousing celebration. Our President, Steve Nickels could not attend but he
was there in the morning planning and cooking our excellent meal with the two chefs by his side. Lasagna,
meatballs and three salads with all the trimmings – everyone had “seconds” for sure. Also, the auction
brought in more money than last year, the proceeds of which go towards the Legion.

Grand River Remembrance Day Tournament
Saturday, 10 November 2018
|
The Township of Chatsworth Novice, Atom and Pee Wee girls’ rep teams are headed to the Grand River Remembrance Day Tournament. Coaches Andrew Torrie, Scott Greenaway and myself have worked hard on these amazing custom jerseys. All of our girls will be honouring Veterans on the back of their jerseys. Many of the honoured Veterans are great grandfathers, family friends or local men and women from Grey and Bruce County.
Jessa, in the photos, is honouring J.T. Robb a young man that attended The Owen Sound Collegiate that was killed on 9 April 1917 (day 1 of Vimy Ridge). Jessa is number 17 in Remembrance of J.T. Robb and all the other Canadians that made the supreme sacrifice on a day that defined Canada as a Nation. Jessa passes his childhood home everyday when she goes to school.
Our jerseys feature the famous poem “In Flander’s Fields” in ghost writing. I love our crest and we had to be granted special permission from Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion at their headquarters in Ottawa for the use of The Poppy. Our Rebel logo on our shoulder is wearing a red tam. Over our heart is the Victoria Cross circled by the 3 local men that earned the VC, including Billy Bishop. Lastly thank you to our sponsors, local Legions from Owen Sound, Tara and Chatsworth.
Also thank you to Huron Tractor, Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Horizon Therapy, RF King Excavating, Torrie Farms, GSS Engineering and Barry’s Service Center.
If you know any of these sponsors please share this post. I hope others will post their photos and share the stories of their Veterans. I personally am honouring my grandfather George Rutter. He fought with the 48th Highlanders from the start of the war in 1939 to the bitter end and liberation of Holland in 1945.

5th Annual Oven Mitt Horseshoes
Oven Mitt Horseshoe Tournament is an annual winter sport competition that our branch started. They play horseshoes in the snow at the pits out back of the Legion. There are prizes for the best designed oven mitt and usually 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the horseshoes. The catch is you have to wear the oven mitt on the hand that you throw the horseshoes with. We have people come from Flesherton Legion every year for this competition. It is an awesome day and we always have a silent auction on the same day.

The 2018 winners on February 10, 2018 were the 1st Place team
of Dave Brown and Steve Bartley. Steve Bartley also took the Jokester
Trophy.
